The man, 46, is understood to have been hit by a vehicle in London Road shortly after 9.30am.

Police closed the road between Beaconsfield Road and Cherry Tree Avenue while paramedics tended to the casualty and then drove him to Barton Road where the air ambulance had landed in the playground of Barton Junior School.

Blinds were pulled down on the windows of the school so that pupils could not see what was happening.

A doctor from the air ambulance examined the man in the back of the ambulance and decided he could be taken to hospital by road rather than the helicopter.

He suffered head and thorax injuries, but these are not thought to be life-threatening.
