A man has appeared before magistrates charged with dangerous driving after clothing worth more than £1,000 was stolen from a shop in Dover, and a police officer was hit by a car.

As well as the driving charge, Rory Owen Young, aged 20, of Chislehurst Road, Orpington, is accused of aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring an indictable offence.

Police were called to Marks and Spencer's store in Biggin Street, just before 5pm on Tuesday.

During the investigation there was a collision between a police officer and a silver Ford Focus. The police officer was not injured. The car was located abandoned in Ashford.

Officers investigating the incident arrested a second person, a 29-year-old woman, on suspicion of shoplifting. She has been bailed until May 29 pending further inquiries.
