Police praised for break-in investigation

Three police officers from Deal have been honoured for their work in apprehending the thugs who broke into a home in Hawksdown and beat the owners with a metal bat.

Certificates of merit were awarded by Chief Constable Mike Fuller to Det Con Alistair Barr, Det Con Tony Hughes and Det Sgt Stephen Chapman at an awards ceremony at Kent Police HQ.

The officers were praised for their diligence and commitment in carrying out an "efficient and methodical" investigation which led to early arrests of the three men who broke into the house of Dover newsagent owners Melanie and John Fox in June, 2007.

They threatened the family with guns and beat the mother and father with a metal bat then tied them up.

They then stole cash, jewellery and three vehicles. They were later sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court for a total of 36 years in prison.

Mr Fuller said the officers should be "rightly proud" of what they have achieved.

"The awards reflect exceptional service, including bravery, the highest standards of professionalism, commitment and outstanding work.

"I never fail to be inspired by the selflessness shown by the winners of these awards and it gives me enormous pride to thank those receiving them, not only on behalf of the force, but also on behalf of the wider community."

Det Sgt Chapman was congratulated for his supervision, professional conduct, and commitment to the investigation.
