Boy rushed to hospital with glass in foot after treading on it at Dover beach

A pleasant day on Dover’s beach turned into a nightmare after a nine-year-old boy was rushed to hospital with glass in his foot.

Darren Eaton-Brown, of Cherry Tree Avenue, Dover, was at the beach with his three sons, and a group of friends with children, on Thursday.

His son Morgan spent four hours at Buckland Hospital and had an x-ray to ensure there was no glass left in the foot.

Mr Eaton-Brown said: “I went straight over and carried him back to where we were sitting and cleaned it with baby wipes. We dressed it by making a makeshift bandage from the wipes and took him straight to hospital.”

The father-of-three was infuriated with the amount of rubbish at the beach, including glass. He insisted that he checked the area, opposite the Premier Inn, where his party was sitting before they settled on the seafront.

Police confirmed that they were aware of the incident.

The Port of Dover and Dover District Council have shared responsibility of the beach, both of whom are responsible for different sections.

In this case, DDC is responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of the area.

A spokesman said: “We are of course concerned to hear someone has been hurt on the beach, and we are re-inspecting the area we are responsible for immediately.

“We can confirm DDC’s contractors are required to clean the area at least daily at this time of year.

“We would also like to take this chance to remind all beach users to make sure they take their rubbish home with them.”
