ALISON STREETER: success despite suffering from asthma

ELEVEN years after claiming the title Queen of the Channel - and eight years since completing more Channel swims than anyone else - Dover woman Alison Streeter has added another swim to her collection.

Setting off from Shakespeare Beach, she made her 42nd successful swim of the Channel, climbing ashore at Cap Blanc Nez 13 hours 44 minutes later.

It was almost 11 years to the day since she had become Queen of the Channel. Despite suffering from asthma, Alison completed her first Channel swim in 1982.

She became Queen of the Channel, making the most Channel swims by a woman, in September 1992, and three years later she went on to beat Mike Read's record of 31 successful swims.

Two years ago she made her 40th swim, and in July this year she made her 41st. Her tally includes one three-way and three two-way swims.

Channel swimmers from all over the world have sent congratulatory messages to Alison, who works in London but has a flat in Dover.
