Councillor's 'joke' reaches the top

Cllr Roger Walkden: "not racist"
Cllr Roger Walkden: "not racist"

A Dover councillor says he has been contacted by David Cameron's office over a "joke" which he posted on a website forum.

Cllr Roger Walkden, a Conservative member of Dover District Council, is a regular contributor to the Dover Forum website which has a section for jokes.

He posted an item about an asylum seeker being granted three wishes by a fairy.

But Cllr Walkden says a complaint was made about it, and he has asked the website owner, Paul Boland, to remove it.

"To anyone who has been offended by his joke I apologise," he said.

"I apologise unreservedly that it has caused such monumental offence. I am also sorry that complaints can be made under the umbrella of racism. I have never been racist in my life, I don't have any racist thoughts at all.

Cllr Walkden said this would be his last posting on the Dover Forum to save Mr Boland and the Forum "any further embarrassment".

Mr Boland said he was staggered by the scale of the issue. "Roger has now been contacted by none other than David Cameron's office, which, of course, is quite a shock to all of us for it to reach national proportions.

"Roger is one of our star contributors and one of Dover's best communicators."

Other contributors to the Forum have sprung to Cllr Walkden's defence and urged him not to quit.
