The nursery confirmed that no children were in the building at the time the grenade was found.

Rachel Kittle, administrator at Happy Feet, said: “Pre-school hadn’t started so no children were on site.

“The gate to the site was shut and parents were turned away at the gate.”

She confirmed that the nursery would be closed for the day and would re-open tomorrow.

The staff who were evacuated by police were allowed back on site at around 10.30am.

Ms Kittle said: “It was an old training grenade that posed no danger at all to anybody. Bomb disposal took it away with them.

“I’ve no idea how it got there. I don’t think we will ever know.

“There was no danger to any children or anybody.”

Kent Police confirmed a grenade was found just outside the premises and the Army was called as a precaution.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: “The nursery has cleared itself out and the bomb squad was called.

“The bomb squad attended and reported it was a training exercise grenade. It was confirmed everything was OK by 10.20am.”

Happy Feet Pre-school and Toddler Group posted on its Facebook page: “Due to an incident the nursery is closed until further notice. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause you.”
