Defibs for Dover project sees equipment added to Elms Vale Recreation Ground

A potentially lifesaving defibrillator has been installed in a Dover park.

The machine is in a bright yellow-painted phone box and can be found in Elms Vale Recreation Ground.

It has been installed as part of the Defibs for Dover project, launched by Clare Sykes, Samantha Hammond, and Jan and Tim Hyde a year ago.

They are already behind the installation of a defibrillator at Danes Recreation Ground.

Ms Sykes, a trainee ambulance practitioner, says this important medical equipment should be everywhere.

She said: “For a long time Dover has not had enough defibrillators to cover the vast amount of populated areas.

“We started a Facebook page and started to collect donations for a defibrillator at Elms Vale park.

“The nearest accessible defibrillator before this one was at the fire station in the middle of town, which is too far away.

“The recreation ground is used every day by dog walkers, kids playing in the park, or people playing football.

“We wanted to raise funds to house a defibrillator so if the need ever arose, there is one there.”

The group has carried out several fundraisers for the defibrillators such as a walk, raffle, and schools including Vale View Primary School and Priory Fields School had a dress down day.

Ms Sykes added: “We have chosen it to be a yellow phone box as it’s the colour of the actual defibrillator cabinets, we also want it to stand out and for people to recognise it now as a life line not a phone line.

“Our aim really is to get as many as we can in Dover.”
