A business in Sandwich has been forced to change its name after a series of “heavy-handed” letters were sent from a multi-million pound global company.
Computer giant Intel started sending Intell Windows, based on Sandwich Industrial Estate, letters asking that the company change its name in order to preserve its branding.
The first one was received on January 5, this year.
Rob Smith, owner of the company – now called Intelligent Windows, part of the Intelligent Home Improvement Group – said: “They were just a bit heavy handed. They have forced us to change our name even though we’re not in the same business.
“The minute they see Intell they stamp it down and they are quite bullish about it.
“I ignored it at first because I thought it was a joke, but I had to take legal advice. It cost £1,800 just to send a letter back.
“The financial impact of having to change the name and all the logos is quite a lot but we’re not in a position to take on a £740 million turnover company.”
Mr Smith said he didn’t understand how a small business could have an impact on such a large one.
He was also concerned that no compensation had been offered to the company for changing the name, website, and the logo on all its vehicles and documents. This has cost the company around £15,000.

A spokesman for Intel said: “I can confirm Intel did send a letter to Intell Windows regarding Intel’s trademark rights.
“The Intel brand is one of the most valued brands in the world. Over the years we have invested billions of dollars to create that value.
“As with any other asset, we have an obligation to our shareholders to protect the value of our brand. Unlike other intellectual property, trademark law requires a company like Intel to take proactive steps to protect its trademark or run the risk of losing its rights in the trademark.”
Mr Smith would now like to welcome old and new customers to Intelligent Windows part of the Intelligent Home Improvement Group, providing windows, doors and conservatories.
