Dover poised to sign proven striker

CLIVE WALKER: player he's targeted is good in the air

DOVER Athletic manager Clive Walker is pursuing the one piece in the jigsaw which he feels he needs in order for Whites to mount a serious challenge for the Dr Martens League title next season.

Although Walker refused to reveal the identity of his target, the position that he plays will come as no surprise to anybody. After finishing this season as the lowest scorers in the Premier Division with 42 goals from 42 games, Dover’s pressing need is to find a proven goalscorer.

“I have obviously got to find someone up front and I have got a target in mind,” said Walker. “He’s out of contract and I have spoken to him. He’s good in the air, and can score goals, but I don’t want to say anymore than that in case it alerts other clubs as to who it is.”

Walker is off to the United States for a month from the middle of June for his annual coaching trip, and is keen to secure a new striker before his departure. He said: “I want to get everything sorted out before I go on June 19. I am going to have pay decent money to get a striker, and that’s all I can afford.”

The tight financial restraints at Crabble have meant that Walker has had to release two players, Steve Norman and Paul Sykes, in order to “free up” the cash to bring in a striker.
