Faversham Christmas lights committee asking for help after car drove into tree

An Audi reportedly ploughed into a Christmas tree in Faversham town centre, just days before the light switch-on.

Volunteers who have worked relentlessly throughout the last month to get the decorations up, believe the collision has caused £500 worth of damage.

The dark blue Audi estate car reportedly drove from Court Street towards Market Place and crashed into one of the posts which surrounds the tree.

Chairman of the committee Steve Sherlock said: "The fence posts were put up last Sunday and at around 10.30pm on Monday (November 16) someone driving an Audi estate demolished the post.

"We think that maybe they were under the influence of something as they didn't deviate at all, they just ploughed straight into it.

"It has damaged the post and the socket in the ground so we are looking at about £500 worth of damage."

The lights are funded primarily by donations so Mr Sherlock says it will be cash which is difficult to replace and money which would usually be used on running and improving the display.

The light switch-on begins at 5pm on Saturday, November 28.

In a Facebook post by the committee, they say: "Do you know who did this? Were you the driver? The car must have also received significant damage from the impact so do you know anyone with a recently damaged blue Audi estate?

"We would be very grateful if the driver would come forward, or make contact directly with our insurers with a view to making amends for the damage caused. Otherwise we will have to pay for repairs from our own funds."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Mr Sherlock and the committee via their Facebook page here.
