Faversham: Council to tackle graffiti

Graffiti was daubed on Faversham walls less than 24 hours after they were repainted.

Network Rail had a spring clean last week, giving the town a fresh lick of paint, but their handiwork was blemished in a matter of hours.

The subway that links The Mall and Station Road was given a bright white makeover, but soon had tags scrawled all over it.

The foot bridge between the recreation ground and Preston Avenue was also targeted.

Network Rail spokesman Chris Denham said: “We repainted the subway and the Long Bridge across the railway at Faversham on Thursday.

“By Friday morning, they had both been graffitied. This is incredibly sad.

“We sent security patrols to monitor both sites after the work had been done and the vandals had roughly an hour in between patrols to do their ‘work’.

“The desperation of these people to spoil the work of our staff, waste tax and fare payers’ money and ruin the look of Faversham is astonishing.

“We are looking to see what else can be done about this in future as we cannot repaint the subway every day.”

On Tuesday, borough council officers, Network Rail staff and town councillors Ted Wilcox and David Simmons met to look at the graffiti and formulate a plan.

They say they are now trying to tackle the issue, with environment wardens patrolling the area regularly and a new CCTV camera near the underpass.

Cllr Simmons said: “Cllr Wilcox and I met with Network Rail and officers from Swale Borough Council to see what can be done to improve both of these sites.

“A number of helpful suggestions were made and the various parties have gone away to investigate further.

“At this stage, I do not want to be specific, but people can be assured that by working in partnership we will do our best to improve the situation.”

Anyone who has any information about the graffiti, should contact police on 101 or the council on 01795 417850.
