Man charged with money laundering after officers found £62k cash hidden in car in Folkestone

A man has been charged with a money laundering offence after £62,000 was found in a car.

Officers stopped a vehicle as it was going outbound at the Channel Tunnel in Folkestone about 2am on Wednesday.

Following searches, they located cash totalling £62,000 hidden in a roof box, under a blanket and in silver tea-pots.

Bakhtiar Tawfiq, 39, from Fareham in Hampshire was arrested and later charged with concealing criminal property, namely the cash.

He was remanded in custody and appeared at Medway Magistrates Court via video link today.

He was further remanded in custody to appear at Canterbury Crown Court on October 5.
