They searched the area but no one matching the suspect's description was found.

A witness – who did not wish to be named – saw the drama unfold at about 6pm while she was walking along the street near the junction with Leith Park Road.

She said: "We were standing near the Prince of Orange. I believe there was two unmarked and around five or six normal police cars.

"They did not have their sirens or blue lights on and seemed to be waiting outside a house.

"A couple of officers jumped out of their vehicles with guns and went to the door. We did not see everything but we saw enough.

"Around four of five officers with guns were standing with their backs to the door and looked like they were waiting for someone to go in.

"They were like that for around five or six minutes. There was police waiting outside. In total there must have been at least 15 officers. Whatever it was, was pretty big."

Officers were at the scene until about 9pm and their inquiries into the incident are ongoing.

No injuries were reported.
