Bingo hall could become nightclub

A new nightclub could be opening in Gravesend town centre.

It is just one of the options considered for the former Gala Bingo Hall, which is tucked away at the top of New Road.

After 40 years of providing entertainment and pockets full of winnings to its bingo customers, the hall closed in April 2008.

A year on, Da Vinci Properties Limited, which owns the 12,500 sq ft building, has submitted two planning applications to change its use to a nightclub or pub.

Director David Marks said: “We have been approached by people who would like to use it as a rave club, with music for youngsters on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“But the word nightclub means any sort of club so it could become a jazz or even a pole-dancing venue. It would not need a lot of work. It has CCTV, toilets, a bar, reception area and it’s carpeted.”

Pelham ward councillor Makhan Singh believes the building could be put to better use.

He said: “As a ward councillor I am concerned. I don’t think we need any more nightclubs in the town centre.”

But Mr Marks said he has not ruled out the possibility of the hall being restored to its former glory as a cinema.

He said: “The feelers we put out didn’t produce anybody coming back and saying they wanted to go down that route. We also looked at the possibility of a day-care facility.

“But if someone did say they wanted it for cinema use then we would talk to them. I think it would be a very good use.”

Da Vinci Properties Ltd is welcoming suggestions from the public on what they would like.
