Gravesham councillors have agreed with plans to turn street lights in Gravesham off to save cash, but have asked Kent County Council to leave those in Thames Way on.

KCC wants to turn 88 lights off across the town in early summer.

In total, 27 lights will be switched off in Gravesend Road, Shorne, nine in Rochester Road, and 18 in Crete Hall Road.

At a meeting to discuss the proposal, Gravesham council asked that 34 lights in Thames Way remain on.

Across the county, 3,100 lights have been earmarked for the year-long trial – 182 of those in Dartford.

KCC says it could save as much as £150,000 a year. Upgrading lamps and changing bulbs in other street lights has already saved £130,000.

A sensor will be installed in the lamps with a built-in timer, meaning it will turn on automatically at dusk, turn off at midnight and come back on at 5.30am and stay on until first light.
