Affected parts included the town centre, Milton, Denton and areas along the Thames and Medway Canal.

Not all customers in the area were without power and engineers investigated the fault.

It was understood repairs were needed to a damaged electrical cable caused by another company.

An update as of 4pm said: "Thanks for your patience this afternoon. Our engineers have been in contact with us to let us know that we have asked for extra engineer to help with the repairs needed to the damaged electrical cable caused by another company, they are now en route.

"To give them time to do this safely, the estimated timeframe to restore your power is now between 19.30 and 20.30.

"We're sorry this is taking longer than expected, and we'll continue to keep you up to date, but if any change to this time comes in from our staff I'll let you know as soon as we hear."

As of 10.53pm, UK Power Networks said supplies had been restored.
