Secrets revealed in archaeological dig

THE secrets of Shorne Wood Country Park are being revealed at an archaeological dig.

Families have been invited along to help unearth the remains of a large medieval manor house, the home of Henry de Cobham.

He was Sheriff of Kent and Keeper of the Coasts in the 13th century.

The dig has been going on for three weeks and so far they have found the remains of the main hall house, the kitchen, a bakery and a store.

A stone cross, bones, cauldron fragments and roof and floor tiles have also been discovered.

KCC community archaeological officer Lyn Palmer said: "The Cobham family has long been associated with this area and it is fascinating to find out about their former home as it brings local history to life.

"It’s also been great fun for local people to get involved and take part in the dig to show that they care for their heritage.”
