Crews arrived at about 9.15pm yesterday and left an hour later after using a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

A fire service spokesperson said no injuries had been reported.

Thameslink Rail shared images of the damage.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm that this was an act of vandalism that caused damage to feeder cables.

“These cables help supply electricity to the track.”

The fire meant trains from London to Gravesend could not run throughout the evening.

Passengers were told to use their tickets at no extra cost on Fastrack buses between Gravesend and Ebbsfleet International.

Just before 10pm it was announced trains were unable to run in both directions between Gravesend and Strood.

A replacement bus service was put in place from Dartford to Gillingham.

Just after 1.30am today it was confirmed the line through Gravesend had reopened following the fire.
