Travellers park up near Hever Court Road Premier Inn, Gravesend

A group of travellers have been seen parked up by a Premier Inn.

Four caravans have been pictured along the cycle path on the Old A2 in Gravesend by the hotel in Hever Court Road.

A resident nearby said: “There are a few caravans parked up on the Old A2.

“They are at the top end by the hotel but are on the cycle path. I’m not sure when they got there. There is a dog tied up too.”

Their unauthorised encampment, on Kent County Council land, comes after a larger group pitched up at Riverside Country Park in Gillingham yesterday morning – it is not clear if it is the same group.

They arrived at the walking beauty spot a week after about half a dozen travellers pitched up next to a village’s main road.

Seven caravans had been spotted parked on the green between Ash Road and Hoselands View in Hartley last Friday.

On Tuesday, after the travellers were moved on from the area, they set up camp in a children’s play area just 200 yards away.

On Thursday the unauthorised encampment was set to be moved on after almost a week there.

They left the area on Friday night and a clean-up operation began yesterday.

Last year new legislation was brought in to tackle illegal pitches on other people’s land or in local communities.

Under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022, police in England and Wales were given new powers to address harm caused by such unauthorised encampments and new guidance was published.
