Ebbsfleet boss Dennis Kutrieb felt there was still enough attacking flair to his side despite a more defensive approach on Tuesday night.

On the back of a 6-1 defeat at Altrincham, the Fleet changed formation against Dorking Wanderers and, while they were still on the wrong end of the scoreline, Kutrieb felt they did enough to win the game.

“That’s always the risk, that you take too much away (attacking-wise), but at the end of the day we still had enough chances,” said the Fleet boss.

“We have to admit and agree on that, we had a clear-cut chance at the end of the first half, one with David Amoo at the start of the second half, Shaq Coulthirst had an open goal, similar to Saturday when if he just hits the target it’s a goal.

“If you have so many clear-cut chances then you can’t say you took too much away from the boys because we still had enough to score.

“We need to find the basics and deliver them in the right way so we can defend better and be more solid as a team.

“It was a great display from a defensive point of view, everyone worked hard and it was just one moment with a great header from Ottaway. But that was always the only way they could have scored a goal against us.

“Haydn Hollis tried to defend as much as he could, and he defended most of the long balls together with Hayden White very well, but the one moment they scored.”

Without a win in five league games, Kutrieb knows it’s a test of character for his squad.

But he believes everyone at Stonebridge Road has a role to play to help lift his players.

“It's more of a challenge than when you win five in a row to go again and win the sixth one,” said Kutrieb.

“It’s a different challenge because now when you lose a bit of confidence, I try to give it to them, but they need to feel it within themselves.

“This comes by the next good action, next pass, win the duel, whatever it is and then you can build confidence.

“I would like to think they can gain some confidence from the Dorking game as they felt on the pitch we were the better side but it doesn’t matter because you need to win your games.

“Yes, we’ll find out a lot about our squad but it’s always ongoing challenges in football, we’re playing again and again so if you’re not on a perfect run it can be tough. You can lose many points at this moment in time when you’re not on it.”
