Jack Powell's late winner earned 10-man Ebbsfleet maximum points from an enthralling Kent derby on Saturday.
Welling looked to have rescued a point after captain Danny Waldren cancelled out Darren McQueen's early opener.
But the Fleet, who had Dave Winfield sent-off in the first half, had other ideas thanks to Powell's ninth goal of the season.
Both managers stuck to their favourite formations which meant Welling's 4-4-2 against Fleet's 3-5-2 created an open first half.
Welling set the tone inside four minutes when Christian Nanetti robbed Dave Winfield and his pull-back was blasted wide by top scorer Adam Coombes.
Fleet had already threatened on the break by the time they opened the scoring on 13 minutes. Jack Powell worked his way down the right wing and his near-post cross was cleverly turned in by McQueen at the near post.
It was almost 2-0 four minutes later as Sean Shields, who enjoyed plenty of room down the left wing, crossed and Powell turned the ball wide of the near post.
Welling's Lyle Della-Verde was a danger down the left-wing and twice he was played in but had low shots kept out by Fleet keeper Nathan Ashmore.
Coombes then tried his luck with a 30-yard free-kick that Ashmore did well to hold onto.
Fleet had strong claims for a penalty waved away after Rickie Hayles tangled with McQueen in the box.
The visitors were reduced to 10 men eight minutes before half-time when Winfield challenged with former Fleet right-back Matt Fish.
The Wings defender went down and referee Aji Ajibola, after a considerable delay, produced a red card for an apparent elbow.
Fleet replaced McQueen with Jack Connors and their defence was further strengthened when Marvin McCoy came on at the break.
Welling enjoyed possession and Coombes went close to equalising either side of half-time.
But Fleet set up with two banks of four and Welling did not enjoy the same freedom that they did in the first 45 minutes.
Fleet had a good spell midway through the half and it needed a fine tackle by Fish to deny Shields.
But just as it seemed that the visitors had weathered the storm, Welling were back on level terms. Matt Fish drove forward and won a corner. Sam Hatton delivered to the far post and captain Danny Waldren headed his team level.
Ashmore again came to the Fleet's rescue with nine minutes left, saving with his legs to deny substitute Mitchell Nelson from another Hatton corner.
There was another twist late on as Welling pressed the self-destruct button again. Nelson gave away a needless throw-in, Welling failed to clear their lines and Fleet's Bradley Bubb did well to set up Powell for a cool finish.
