Concern over rising rail fares

A PASSENGER watchdog has hit out at the planned inflation-busting fare rises under the new train operator Govia.

Charges under the South Eastern Trains replacement are expected to rise three per cent above inflation for at least five years, London TravelWatch has warned.

Chairman Brian Cooke said: "We are very concerned about the fare rises. Passengers will be paying for high speed trains they will not benefit from."

The group also hopes to meet Govia to discuss other issues, including the proposals to change ticket office hours.

Mr Cooke said: "Passengers must have decently staffed stations to buy tickets and receive assistance - especially if the fares are rising."

But Mr Cook said that overall, his group welcomed the announcement of the new franchisee, and was "pleased to see a substantial commitment to improve passenger facilities and performance, as well as running more trains".
