Improving cancer treatment: ITL Group in Ashford works in consortium including Phillips and Siemens developing tumour imaging device

A medical device manufacturer is working in a consortium of 20 companies including technology giants Phillips and Siemens to create new products to improve cancer treatment.

Integrated Technologies Limited, known as ITL Group, hopes to develop an improved cancer imaging device to identify the size of tumours.

The firm will manufacture prototypes based on designs by King’s College London, which will be presented to Harvard Medical School this summer.

For the project, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 scheme, ITL has been trialling a 3D printer to develop plastic components.

ITL mechanical engineer Dan Hollands, who is leading the work, said: “This has been a very creative project for us and we’ve received great feedback from King’s on our progress – they’ve been impressed by the advances we have made so far, especially considering the short timeframe.”

Stefan Hoelzl from King’s College London said: “Teamwork and collaboration is the key to achieving wonderful things.

“Together with the ITL Group we’ve had the opportunity to improve on the early transducer prototype, which is now a more efficient instrument and provides faster results than anyone initially expected.”
