DTI u-turn a 'victory for commonsense'

THE CBI has praised the Government's decision to revert to the Department of Trade and Industry's original title.

The DTI had been rebranded as the Department for Productivity, Energy and Industry, but it has been decided to go back to the old name.

Commenting on the u-turn, Malcolm Hyde, acting CBI South East regional director, said: "This is a victory for common sense and the taxpayer and one which reflects the pressure placed on the Government by the business community.

"It is essential that the DTI must, as trade and industry secretary Alan Johnson has said, be 'unremittingly for business', a call that everybody in the CBI would wholeheartedly support.

"In today's fiercely competitive global economy, we need a Department that understands what the businesses of not only today but also tomorrow need from Government, and ensures that the voice of the business community is at the heart of the Cabinet."
