Firms courted well ahead

PLANS to avert another Christmas lights crisis in Swanley are being made by the town council - with at least 10 months to go until the big day.

It follows a cash nightmare last year which threatened the annual attraction just days before seasonal celebrations began. A drive for sponsorship by the business community will now be launched and an application for funds lodged with Sevenoaks District Council.

Last year's display was put in jeopardy by a district council funding cut. It took a £2,000 Asda rescue package to help save it.

Swanley Chamber of Commerce, which provided the Christmas display, has since announced it can no longer continue to run the scheme and gifted the lights and fittings to the town council. As a result, town council chiefs have contacted other authorities to obtain comparisons and information about their arrangements.

A report to councillors stated Asda wished to stay involved with the event but could not, at this stage, commit the same level of financial support previously given.
