Tucked away within the grounds of a family estate, this narrow-gauge railway has been a cherished secret for decades, quietly preserving a bygone era of steam and diesel locomotion since its inception in 1975.

As April ushers in the promise of spring, BWLR – proudly continuing its tradition as a family-run operation over 50 years and two generations later – gears up for the railway’s annual festivities. With an exciting line-up of events awaiting visitors, including activities sure to captivate children, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

Kicking off the Easter holidays, April 1 marks the precursor to the much-anticipated Diesel Days, a celebration of vintage engineering and locomotive marvels.

During Diesel Days, guests can immerse themselves in the rich history of diesel locomotives, witnessing these powerful machines in action as they traverse the picturesque countryside along the BWLR's scenic route. From classic diesel engines to more modern models, Diesel Days showcase the evolution of railway technology over the decades.

Throughout the Easter half term, Diesel trains will be operating from Wednesday to Friday, between 11am and 2pm, on a pay-per-ride basis, with an added bonus of a treasure trail for the youngsters!

This event serves as a prelude to the grandeur of the upcoming Steam Event Day on May 5 – a highlight of BWLR's calendar. Steam Event Day transports visitors back in time to the golden age of steam travel, with an impressive line-up of steam locomotives taking centre stage.

Experience the sights, sounds and smells of these magnificent steam engines as they chug along the historic tracks, providing a nostalgic journey through railway history.

Venturing beyond the tracks, visitors are invited to indulge in the railway's culinary delights at the newly opened tea room, open five days a week. Alongside an assortment of teas, coffees and refreshing beverages, it serves hearty breakfasts, delectable lunches and irresistible cakes.

In these economic and environmentally conscious times, the challenges faced by small steam railways, such as BWLR, are ever-present. Yet, the imperative to preserve history and celebrate remarkable engineering remains stronger than ever, underscoring the significance of historic tributes like BWLR.

With 10 steam locomotives, five diesel locomotives and three hand-built wooden carriages for passenger travel, BWLR stands as a testament to craftsmanship and community spirit.

Maintenance is a labour of love, undertaken by dedicated volunteers who meticulously handcraft and fit parts, reflecting the railway's commitment to authenticity and heritage.
