A KENT student has won an Arkwright Scholarship for her excellence in engineering design.

Lucy Cadel, 16, from Chainhurst, near Maidstone, is a former pupil of Kent College Pembury who now attends Oakham School in Rutland.

She passed the Arkwright Aptitude Paper by demonstrating flair and originality in solving engineering design problems and presenting GCSE work to a panel of interviewers.

The selection process included an interview for shortlisted candidates at Imperial College London where Lucy took part in a team exercise.

Lucy, who hopes to pursue a design career, is the eighth Oakham School pupil to win the prestigious award in the past 10 years.

Scholarships are sponsored by industry and charitable trusts. Lucy will be presented at a ceremony hosted by The Institution of Engineering and Technology in London on October 26.
