£1.5 million recycling boost

Recycling rubbish in Bexley looks set to become a lot easier with the announcement of a new facility that will be capable of processing 80,000 tonnes of recycled waste.

The new production line in Thames Road, Crayford, will separate out mixed recylables including glass, steel cans and cardboard ready for recycling.

The new addition to the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) will cost £1.5 million and aims to add to the facilities annual 400,000 tonnes of recycled waste.

Bexley council currently use the facility for recycling the borough’s paper waste.

Mike Frizoni of the Environment and Regeneration Service at the council, said: “Any kind of improvement in recycling is good news.

“Waste diposal is one of the fastest growing budgets that we have and there are real finicial implications to us cutting the amount we said to landfill.

“We are trying to up our game and we need the facilities to do that.”
