A GAS explosion was narrowly avoided when canisters were found in a blazing shop in Strood.

Rush-hour traffic came to a standstill as firefighters tackled the blaze at the Pine Shop 2000 in Cuxton Road.

Police cordoned off the road and evacuated buildings on either side as there was a danger the propane gas cylinders inside the shop could have exploded.

More than 30 firefighters from Strood, Chatham, Thames-side, Hoo and Dartford stations were called to the blaze yesterday afternoon.

Neighbours who had to leave their homes. Thick black smoke could be seen from miles away. Glass from the shop windows could also be heard smashing as the heat intensified.

Builders from Lambe and Evans were working next door when the fire started.

Jeff Rook, assistant divisional officer from Maidstone fire and rescue training centre, said: “When the crew got there we were faced with a very severe fire plus the added danger of propane cylinders inside and outside the building.

“Initially there were two engines sent and another four were called. They managed to get on top of it and kill the fire.”

Although one gas canister exploded Mr Rook said no one was injured.

Firefighters carried out an extensive search of the building but no one was found inside.

Police said this morning that the cause of the blaze did not appear to be suspicious.
