A2 widening gets Government green light

PARTS of the A2 are to be transformed into an eight-lane carriageway, it has been revealed.

The move, to widen the major trunk road between Pepper Hill and Cobham, has been given the seal of approval by the Government.

The new scheme involves adding a fourth lane to both sides of a 3.5 mile stretch of the A2, increasing capacity on the busy section.

A new 2.8 mile section of the A2 will also be built, running eastward between Pepper Hill and Marling Cross to the south of the existing arterial road. This will closely follow the line of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.

Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman, unveiling the scheme, said: "I am pleased that we are now able to press ahead with the second phase of this widening scheme.

"Widening the A2 will help reduce journey times for road users and will contribute to the major regeneration of Kent Thameside, and the north and east of Kent, helping to support jobs and prosperity."

Moving the trunk road further away from residential areas would also help reduce traffic noise and improve air quality, he added.

The extension is the third phase of developments along the A2, with the road widening between Bean and Pepper Hill now complete.

The announcement follows a public inquiry held at Istead Rise earlier this year.
