A BABY girl is in the care of social services after being left outside a supermarket with a tramp for more than an hour.

Police were called to the Walters Yard Sainsbury's store in Bromley, at around 5.30pm last Thursday after the man presented the eight-week-old baby to security staff.

As officers were interviewing shop staff, a 35-year-old woman from Erith and a 26-year-old man from Bexleyheath turned up looking for the child.

After examining the baby in the supermarket office, ambulance staff took the child to the Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough, around 7pm.

A Sainsbury's spokesman said: "The baby was taken care of by colleagues in the store until the police were called and they dealt with it thereafter."

The 26-year-old man was released without charge. The woman has been bailed to return to Bromley police station on April 12.

The baby is said to be safe and well and will be cared for by foster parents until an assessment has taken place.
