Beware the winter glare

MOTORING assistance provider Green Flag is highlighting the danger winter sun poses to drivers, particularly when commuting to and from work.

It is reminding motorists that as well as anti-freeze and ice scrapers, sunglasses are also an essential winter accessory.

Nigel Charlesworth, Green Flag spokesperson, said: “ln winter, the sun rises and sets at peak travel periods - generally at around 8am and 5pm. The effect of this is that, during rush hour, drivers can find themselves dazzled as they are driving directly into the glare of the sun that is too low to be shielded by the sun visor.

“Early morning frost and snow can exacerbate the situation. Countless accidents are caused by motorists who struggle on despite being blinded by the sun.”

Green Flag offers advice as part of its current winter driving campaign, that encourages drivers to wake up to winter weather hazards. Nigel added: “The campaign aims to create a different mindset for motorists, making them aware of less obvious winter risks. As well as the usual winter accessories like antifreeze, carrying sunglasses can also reduce accidents.”
