Bid to break up ravers' parties

RAVERS are facing opposition from the owners of the land on which they have repeatedly held all-night parties.

The latest gathering in Burham, near Maidstone, took place from Saturday evening until Sunday afternoon on disused land off Old Church Road.

A spokeswoman for Maidstone and Malling police said: "We turned away the vast majority of people before they got into the site. We kept an eye on it all night and we did have some calls about the noise."

Fireworks, heard in the early hours of Sunday, are believed to have come from the rave.

Officers from Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council broke up the party under police escort on Sunday afternoon. London-based landowners, Trenport Investments Ltd, have commissioned the building of gates to block the entrance to their land.

Chris Hall, planning and development director at Trenport Investments, said: "We are aware of the illegal and unauthorised use of the company's land and we're desperately trying to work with the local community to put an end to this problem."

He added: "We have put forward a proposal to improve security, principally by closing off a private road."

Mr Hall said: "I think it's going to be a couple of weeks before we can get the gates in place."
