Big field due for Farmers' Drag meeting

THE recent rain is good news for the sport as it should produce plenty of runners for Sunday’s meeting at Charing where the Mid-Surrey Farmers’ Drag hold their fixture with the first of seven races starting at noon.

Two national sponsors will be running their qualifiers for finals, which carry big sums of money to attract owners, so punters will have plenty to work on.

One of the national sponsors is the Volkswagen Touareg Men’s Open, where Fiery Ring is entered, although he may go in the Ladies’ race instead.

He was a winner here at the last meeting, just getting ahead on the winning line after a desperate struggle with Millennium Way, but others entered with a great chance are Indoux and the Grey Barron.

In the Ladies’ race, which is always run at a furious pace, there are three recent winners entered: A Few Bob Back, who won at Marks Tey; Minimo, a winner at High Easter; and Fiery Ring.

Fiery Ring’s stamina is slightly suspect as his wins in Ireland were over two to two-and-a-half miles but his class should see him get the three-mile trip here.

The intermediate race, sponsored by Hiscox, a qualifier for their £6,500 intermediate final to be run at Cheltenham in May, has Aslapoftheeuro entered, a winner here at the last meeting under a great ride from Phil York and, if declared, it should repeat that success. Shoveontommy could be the danger.

Sanamour looks the pick for the Members’ race, having won here at the last meeting with the Honourable Spider and Kenny Davis taking the minor placings.

There are only 13 entered for the Restricted and Change the Plan, ridden by Marcus Gorman, whose horses are in great form, could well add this one to his score.

There are trade stands selling a wide range of products and a safe play area for children with bouncy castle and other attractions.

* Entrance by car costs £20 and £25 regardless of the number of passengers and the car parks offer good viewing.
