POLICE have released one of the three men arrested in connection with a flat fire that killed three people on Friday.

Officers are treating the fire above Blaze restaurant in High Street, Chatham, as suspicious and continue to question two people, but a third man was released without charge on Saturday morning.

It is believed the victims were a mother, a father and their four-year-old son, but police have yet to formally identify them.

More than 80 firefighters from across the county tackled the ferocious blaze, which started at around 1am.

Some people managed to escape from the four-storey building as the fire raged, but the three bodies were found and two injured people were taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.

One man and his daughter escaped from their top floor flat by throwing a duvet over their heads and climbing down a fire ladder, while another, Kevin Wright, escaped through a bedroom window.

Roads around the area are still cordoned off as police continue their investigations.
