One of Margate's historic buildings is on fire this afternoon.

A Grade II-listed property in Hawley Street, Hawley Square, caught fire just after 4.30pm.

Firefighters from across Thanet are at the scene and the square, near Margate town centre, has been cordoned off.

Witnesses have reported seeing flames on the roof of the building, which is believed to be the town's former Conservative club.

It is the second time the building, near Thanet council's offices, has been hit by fire.

The site was badly affected by a similar incident in 2008.
