Boy racers better than the girls

by Katie Lamborn

Male drivers ARE naturally better than female drivers!

That's the finding of an experiment at Kent race circuit Brands Hatch.

It saw 70 three and four year olds testing their skills on the track using electric ride-on cars.

There were three tests: a straight race from start to finish, a reversing test and a maneourvring challenge around cones.

"We were testing things like concentration, spacial awareness, dexterity, control and overall speed," said child psychologist Donna Dawson.

"The girls were actually slightly quicker off the mark in each race but the boys were a third better at concentrating and demonstrating their visual spacial skills."

Pre-school children were used because they haven't started to develop differences in brain structure or been affected by hormones.

FIA Formula Two Championship Driver, Jack Clarke was there overseeing the tests.

He said: “While the boys were better at applying the theory and their scores were more consistent, I think overall the girls were better at taking in information.

"Motorsport is fast becoming a much more mixed sport and there are certainly a lot of female drivers - such as Danica Patrick and Natacha Gachnang, who I have raced against in Formula Two - coming through and some are beating the top male drivers.”
