Ceremony marks major milestone for £86m Medway college

A major milestone in the construction of MidKent College's £86 million Medway campus was marked today.

The overall structure of the new Gillingham base has now been completed and the full height of the building achieved.

To celebrate the achievement Gillingham and Rainham MP Paul Clark tightened the final screw into place in front of invited guests.

These included Sir David Melville CBE, former vice chancellor of MidKent College and now chair of Lifelong Learning UK, Stephen Grix, principal of MidKent College, and Sion Simon MP, further education minister at the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS).

A commemorative plaque was also unveiled to mark the occasion.

Mr Clark said: "I think the new building is absolutely wonderful.

"It will transform lives and give opportunities to so many.

"Thousands of young people will go on to employment with skills and training that is needed for the current day or go on to further or higher education which is wonderful to see happening in Medway."
