CLOUD cover could do nothing to hinder the unmistakable warm atmosphere as almost 400 VIP guests gathered for the traditional High Sheriff’s garden party.

With her connections and dedicated work for numerous charities and unstinting community services over the decades Amanda Cottrell has been a highly respected figure across Kent for decades before her election to the ancient office.

For her it was a delight to welcome so many to share the joy of the extensive grounds of her Laurenden Forstal home in Challock on Friday.

After welcoming guests at the entrance to a giant marquee, most took the opportunity to stroll through the series of formal and wild gardens she has created before relaxing on the manicured lawns listening to musical selections from the Snowdown Colliery Band.

The great and the good from across the county met and mingled just as they have for centuries in support of leaders of the highest office.

Judges, lords and ladies, high ranking Home Office and national police officers, and leaders of Kent’s Sikh and Muslim community, joined many past High Sheriffs and present mayors from across the county displaying their chains and badges of office in the colourful gathering.

Men in summer suits and club ties and ladies sporting their usual stunning selection of hats made an impressive sight in what was gathering of support and friendship for the latest incumbent of the historic office.
