Curious craft at model ships annual rally

It’s not often that a radio controlled sailing kettle shares the waves with warships and a mother duck and her ducklings.

But at the 22nd annual rally of the Ramsgate Vikings Model Ships Club almost any form of craft was possible - and that’s the charm of the hobby that attracted dozens of enthusiasts from around Kent to the West Cliff boating pool.

More than 120 different craft were sailed including tug boats, yachts, cruisers, powerboats and even a sailing vacuum cleaner.

A poignant moment was the presentation of a trophy in memory of long-time organiser Ken Smith, who died last October. His widow Maggie said: “The family wanted to present a memorial trophy in Ken’s name to the person who has put so much into organising the show for this year. We felt quite fittingly that it went to the club’s treasurer John Winterburn."

Mr Winterburn said: "I was shocked, surprised and honoured when I was presented with the trophy by Maggie. It was a splendid gesture and I accepted it on behalf of all our members who work so hard to keep the annual rally going and who maintain the community spirit of the club.”

Ramsgate mayor Cllr Kay Dark was among the guests at the rally and she distributed club crest fridge magnet mementoes to those taking part.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the club should turn up at the boating pool from 10am to midday any Thursday or Sunday when members hold their meetings
