Digger used in bank ram raid

A stolen digger was used in the attempted theft of cash machines from a bank early this morning.

The brightly-coloured digger, which was taken from Wrotham last night was used in a bid to remove two cash machines from the wall of NatWest bank in Larkfield, near Maidstone, shortly after 3am.

The digger was left at the scene after the attempt failed - but has since been recovered by police.

Police believe two other vehicles may have been involved, including a flat bed truck and a 4x4 vehicle. The truck has been removed from the scene and is being forensically examined.

The bank was structurally damaged in the incident and has been cordoned off while it is assessed on safety grounds.

Officers would like to speak to anyone who saw the vehicles immediately prior to the incident – they believe that they may have travelled in convoy to the scene.

Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 01732 379160.
