A KENT police chief says teenage boys are showing "a blatant disregard for public safety" by throwing objects at vehicles from a bridge above a main road.

Police are investigating two incidents of criminal damage to vehicles travelling along the A249 between Sittingbourne and Maidstone.

The first happened on Sunday, June 24, at about 12.45pm on the Maidstone-bound carriageway near the Bobbing slip road.

A grey Ford Focus was struck by an object thrown from the bridge above by two teenage boys. It caused around £200 worth of damage to the car.

The second incident happened the following day at around 4.20pm near the same location.

The windscreen of a green Land Rover Discovery was hit by what was thought to be either a large stone or half house brick, which caused it to crack.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "Luckily both motorists escaped unhurt but police are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incidents."

Borough Commander of Mid Kent, Ch Insp Mark Chambers, said: “We will not tolerate this type of ruthless behaviour and blatant disregard for public safety. My neighbourhood officers are taking part in a dedicated operation to catch these offenders.

"I would urge anyone who may be able to help with our investigation to come forward as soon as possible."
