Drugs seized in swoop at prison complex

Police seized drugs and arrested two people in a major police operation targeting illegal users.

More than 400 vehicles were checked by the force's automatic number plate recognition camera during road checks on the Isle of Sheppey on Friday.

The Island Neighbourhood Team set up the multi-agency operation on Church Road, Eastchurch - just inside the entrance to the Isle of Sheppey Prison Cluster of Elmley, Swaleside and Standford Hill.

More than 20 staff were involved, including police, dog handlers, prison officers and an immigration officers.

Over the course of the day, Police stopped vehicles and visitors entering and leaving the complex, with the following results:

~ one woman arrested for possession with intent to supply drugs (cannabis)

~ one man arrested for driving whilst disqualified, possession of cannabis and possession of an offensive weapon (a knife).

~ two men cautioned for possession of herbal cannabis.

~ three people (a man and a woman) given a street warning for possession of herbal cannabis.

~ three vehicles were seized for having no insurance.

Sergeant Neil Kimber led the operation and said: "The positive results achieved today show how effective working with our partners can be to reduce the drugs supply to the prison cluster. Although this operation was held during national drugs week, our focus on criminal activity in this area will continue with more road checks planned in the future."
