Four Second World War bombs have been exploded after being discovered at Sandwich Bay.

Royal Navy bomb disposal experts were called in today after the devices, each about a foot long and six inches in diameter, were uncovered by a passer-by.

With the help of the coastguard, the beach was cordoned off and the area cleared of people.

The four bombs were put together and exploded on the beach by the ordnance unit at 10.40am.

Dover coastguard watch manager Tony Chester said: "From the pictures we saw, the bombs were heavily encrusted with rust and marine growth. There was only a fraction of their shape showing.

"Such explosives are discovered around this coast once or twice a month, there was one recently in Dover Harbour.

"Anyone who comes across something they think might be an old explosive needs to be extremely cautious and not tamper with any suspect items. They must dial 999 immediately and report such items to us or the police - we will deal with them."
