Future of town's carnival in doubt

STEVE WARD: urging people to come forward to help

RAMSGATE may have seen the last of its annual summer carnivals, town mayor Steve Ward has warned.

He was dismayed that only two new members turned up to a special meeting of the carnival committee on Monday and said that without more support the 60 year run of processions may be over.

He said: "The event not only provides entertainment for the hundreds of people who line the streets on carnival day, but also promotes the town to visitors, and encourages tourism by parading the town’s name at other carnivals. "

In a last ditch attempt to save the carnival there will be a crisis meeting in Albion House, Ramsgate, on Monday, November 28.

Committee members are required to take on the role of secretary, drive Miss Ramsgate and the float to local towns to attend other carnivals, chaperones for the Carnival Court, and also to assist on carnival day.

Cllr Ward said: "I believe that the people of Ramsgate continue to want a carnival in the town. If this is so perhaps they would let me know their feelings by attending the next meeting, joining the committee and helping to organise future carnivals."
