Gillingham assistant Ian Hendon praises the team despite losing to Southend United at Roots Hall

Gillingham assistant manager Ian Hendon had little to criticise the team for following their Johnstone’s Paint elimination on Tuesday night.

“Obviously it’s disappointing that we’ve lost on penalties but there were positives to take from it,” said Hendon (pictured).

“We have come out of the game after 90 minutes probably with the better chances.

“I think they went close once with a header from Corr, which Lance pushed over quite comfortably, and late on in the second half he made a save down to his left. That was about it and away from home he’s had two things to do, so that bodes well for us away from home with our performance.

“We have gone out of a competition but the performance and work-rate was there and if the players keep putting in a shift like they are doing at the moment results are going to come.

“Collectively they all put a shift in and worked their socks off, as they have been doing since I’ve been at the football club. As long as they continued to do that, and I’m sure they will, we haven’t seen anything to tell us they won’t, and the results will turn and we will get that elusive away win.”
