Gillingham could be heading back to France for an early pre-season test.

Chairman Paul Scally had been left to organise the summer schedule in the interim period between Mark Stimson’s departure as manager and Andy Hessenthaler’s arrival.

So far only a home game against Peterborough United on Tuesday, July 20, has been arranged, but more matches are now expected to follow.

Mr Scally (pictured) said: "There was nothing organised apart from a game against Dartford and so for 48 hours I had been on the phone speaking to friends and managers to see if we could arrange some games. It’s something that should have already been done before now and maybe that tells its own story."

Last season the Gills travelled to Calais for a pre-season test, which turned out a lot more physical than had been hoped.

"We’re looking to see who is in France in July," said Mr Scally. "We know Calais are ready to play us again but I’m not sure if we are prepared for that battle just yet.

"It’s an option and there are a couple of teams in Le Touquet as well so that’s another option. Everything is happening now we have a manager in place."
