Gillingham will face stiff competition if they want to sign striker Danny Kedwell.

The 27-year-old handed in a transfer request at AFC Wimbledon last week after failing to agree a new contract with the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off winners.

Kedwell has one year left on his deal at the League 2 newboys and has been heavily linked with a move to Priestfield – although the expected £100,000 asking price could prove a stumbling block.

Crawley had two bids for Kedwell (pictured) rejected last summer and Gillingham assistant boss Ian Hendon admitted: "Teams will bid for him as he is a handful and he impressed me when I’ve seen him.

"I don’t know how much they are asking for but from what I’ve heard they are open to offers."

Asked if Gillingham are preparing a bid for the striker, Hendon replied: "That’s down to the manager."

Kedwell, who lives in Sittingbourne, is well known locally after playing for teams including Welling United, Chatham Town and Lordswood, as well as in the Medway Messenger Sunday League for Quested.

He was club captain for AFC Wimbledon last season and scored 24 goals, along with the winning penalty in the play-off final shoot-out against Luton.

Hendon added: "I know Danny put in a transfer request. We’re aware of him as we are of many players.

"He had a great season for AFC Wimbledon and is a local lad."
