The young midfielder is progressing well after fracturing his foot and could feature for Gillingham’s reserves on Wednesday.

Payne had been a virtual ever-present for the Gills with only injury keeping him out of the side.

He has played 16 games for the club this season and was voted by fans as the KM Group October player-of-the-month. His last appearance came in the 2-0 home defeat to Dover in the FA Cup.

Gillingham are due to face Aldershot in the Combination League at Priestfield on Wednesday afternoon.

Also hoping to play in that game are Garry Richards, Curtis Weston, Dennis Oli, Simon King and Andy Barcham as they all return from respective injury problems.
